What is Pedal for Alzheimer’s?

AN ENDURANCE CYCLING EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH INITIATIVE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE MEDICAL CENTER.

Pedal for Alzheimer’s is building on the tremendous success of its inaugural Pedal for Pat event, held in October 2017, followed by a second annual 11-day event held in October 2018. The 1098 Cyclists, a team capped at 12, will once again pedal 1,098 miles to honor each win of the late-legendary University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt’s NCAA record 1,098 wins. Each mile will be a victory as the 1,098 Cyclists ascend from Knoxville, Tennessee, through The Great Smoky Mountains to North and South Carolina, down the Georgia and Florida coasts, and concluded in Daytona Beach.

This year, in an effort to expand the event to a wide-ranging group of cyclists, there will be a kick-off Day One loop ride in Knoxville, Tennessee. This ceremonial ride, open to the general public, will send off the 1098 Cyclists as they embark on another adventurous journey to find a cure. The kick-off ride is symbolic of Pat Summitt’s life motto: “You Win In Life With People.” The more people who show up, the more YOU are doing to help us find a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Due to popular demand, there will be an opportunity for cyclists to join the Pedal for Alzheimer’s ride during either the first SIX days as a Purple Team cyclist or the final SIX days with the Orange Team cyclists.

This is no small task whether you are a member of the core group of 1098 Cyclists or a Purple or Orange Team cyclist. Each day will be challenging as the group will cycle approximately 100 miles by riding together in a pace line the majority of the time. Mental toughness is a MUST for all of the cyclists who participate in any part of the 1,098-mile journey. Each cyclist understands the greater purpose of this ride through their commitment to raising money for the fight against Alzheimer’s. Each rider is required to not only pay for their lodging and food expenses up front but also to raise significant donations for the cause.

Pat Summitt was courageous in her fight against Alzheimer’s. The 1098 Cyclists are taking courage on the road in 2019 with another epic 1,098-mile ride!
